Bluetongue in Belgium: Follow-up report No. 1

Translation of information received on 4 Sep 2006 from Dr Luc Engele, Chief Veterinary Officer, Federal State Service for Public Health, Food Chain Safety and Environment, Animal and Plant Health Policy Department, Brussels:

End of this report period: 1 Sep 2006.

Identification of agent: bluetongue virus serotype 8.

Date of 1st confirmation of the event: 18 Aug 2006.

Clinical disease: yes.

Nature of diagnosis: clinical and laboratory.

New outbreaks: Between 18 - 24 Aug 2006, 27 new outbreaks were identified at the Liege administrative division and one on a sheep farm at Limberg. Of the 27 farms at Liege, all but 3 were cattle farms. In 2260 susceptible cattle, the case fatality rate was almost 20 percent (12/58), while for sheep it was 60 percent (3/5).



Laboratory where diagnostic tests were performed: Veterinary and Agrochemical Research Centre (national laboratory)

Results: ELISA RT-PCR were positive for bovine and ovine samples on 18 Aug 2006.

Source of outbreaks or origin of infection: unknown or inconclusive.

Bluetongue in Germany: Follow-up report No. 3

Information received on 6 Sep 2006 from Prof. Dr. Werner Zwingmann, Chief Veterinary Officer, Ministry of Consumer Protection, Food and Agriculture, Bonn:

End of this report period: 6 Sep 2006.

Identification of agent: bluetongue virus.

Date of start of the event: 21 Aug 2006.

Clinical disease: yes.

Nature of diagnosis: clinical and laboratory.

New outbreaks: Between 29 Aug - 6 Sep 2006, there were 24 farms involved in the outbreak. These farms were located in: Aachen (3), Aachen, Stadt (10), Duren (3), Euskirchen (4), Monchengladbach, Stadt and Rheinisch-Burnisher Kreis (3).

Of these farms, one in Euskirchen had mufflons (_Ovis ammon musimon_), which are also called European wild sheep. Three other farms had 2 species on them, in combinations of bovine, ovine and caprine. There were goat-only and 3 sheep-only farms, while there were 19 bovine only farms. There were 1621 susceptible cattle on the bovine farms, with 81 cases, no animals deaths, none destroyed or slaughtered. On the farms with sheep on them, there were 118 susceptible sheep yielding 5 cases and no animals deaths, none destroyed or slaughtered. The farm with European wild sheep had 150 susceptible animals and one case with no animals deaths, none destroyed or slaughtered. Finally, 3 goats were involved in this outbreak to date, with no cases (all goats on farms where other species had cases).

Results: cELISA test between 26 Aug - 4 Sep 2006 were positive.
