CLASSICAL SWINE FEVER IN CROATIA: Follow-up report No. 2

Information received on 7 Sep 2006 from Dr Mate Brstilo, Director of
the Veterinary Administration, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Zagreb:

End of this report period: 6 Sep 2006.

Identification of agent: classical swine fever virus.

Date of start of the event: 17 Jul 2006.

Clinical disease: yes.

Nature of diagnosis: clinical, post-mortem and laboratory.

New outbreaks: 6 new outbreaks were reported in Osijecko-baranjska
county (Bijelo Brdo) and Vukovarsko srijemska (5 farms at Borovo)
between 14 and 28 Aug. There were a total of 578 susceptible pigs on
the 6 farms. Two farms in Borovo reported 6 and 3 cases each, all of
which died. The rest of the pigs were destroyed.

Description of affected population: domestic pigs in family-run farms.

Diagnosis: Laboratory where diagnostic tests were performed: Croatian
Veterinary Institute, Zagreb

Results: ELISA between 16 Aug and 1 Sep 2006 were positive

Source of outbreaks or origin of infection: contact with wild animals
suspected.
